Located in Central America, Costa Rica has what one may call, the ultimate in vacation options. For beach lovers, there are over 762 miles of coast line on the Pacific and the Caribbean that offer opportunities for sunbathing, walking, and swimming. For nature lovers, 25% of Costa Rica's land mass is covered in national parks & preserves, representing 4-5% of the world's biodiversity. In the country's interior, you will find the Arenal Volcano, which is listed among the 10 most active volcanoes in the world. It last erupted in 1968, but thermal hot springs are the areas' main attraction, as well as a number of trails. For water lovers, white water rafting is a must in Costa Rica, as well as surfing and diving. Cocos Island, on the Pacific side, and Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refugee on the Caribbean side are home to over 6700 species.
There are three main areas in Costa Rica, served by two airports, Liberia and San Jose. The first is the Guanacaste area in northwest Costa Rica, which is known for its beaches, charming towns and nearby rainforests. Most hotels are located on the beach and many are all-inclusive. You'll find dry, arid plains, wrapped with rain forests that are a vibrant green during the rainy season. The climate here has highs in the mid- to high-70's all year long with their rainy season June to October, but think of it as more of an afternoon shower and not rains that impede your vacation. You'll find the best values during this time, but the best weather November - May.
The second area is the Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Region, which is in the interior of the country. You can fly into Liberia or San Jose to visit the ecological wonders in this area, including rainforests, hot springs, mud baths, and cloud forests. This area offers a truly unique vacation with an overwhelming number of flora and fauna, as well as parrots, monkeys, mountain cats and other breathtaking wildlife.
The San Jose and Pacific Coast Region, serves as the more cosmopolitan side of Costa Rica with a wealth of dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities. The downtown area has a rich history and is the center of the city. The Puntarenas area offers the amenities of a more developed beach town and is home to the Manuel Antonio National Park.
